Your rights at work

As an unpaid carer in the UK, you have certain rights at work under the Equality Act 2010. These include:
  • 1. Protection from discrimination: You are protected from discrimination at work because of your caring responsibilities. This includes discrimination because you are caring for someone, or because you have requested flexible working arrangements.
  • 2. Right to request flexible working: You have the right to request flexible working arrangements to help you balance your caring responsibilities and work. This can include changes to your working hours, location, or pattern of work.
  • 3. Right to time off for dependants: You have the right to take time off work to deal with an emergency involving the person you are caring for, or to make arrangements for their care.
  • 4. Right to a reasonable adjustment: Your employer has a duty to make reasonable adjustments to your working conditions or hours to remove or reduce any disadvantages you may face because of your caring responsibilities.
  • 5. Right to take unpaid leave: You can take unpaid leave to look after a dependant, and may be able to take a career break.
  • 6. Right to a carer's assessment: You have the right to an assessment of your needs as a carer, as well as the person you are caring for.
It's important to note that these rights are not absolute and your employer may have valid reasons for not being able to accommodate your request for flexible working arrangements or adjustments. It's also important to know that you can contact Carers UK for more detailed information and support regarding your rights and benefits as a carer.
