Taking time off at work to care

Approaching your employer about taking time off to care for someone can be a difficult conversation, but there are a few things you can do to make it go more smoothly:
  • 1. Be prepared: Before you meet with your employer, gather information about your responsibilities as a carer, the person you are caring for, and your options for taking time off. This will help you present a clear and well-reasoned case to your employer.
  • 2. Be honest: Explain your situation to your employer in an honest and open way. Be honest about the demands of caring for someone and how it is impacting your work.
  • 3. Be specific: Outline the specific time off that you are requesting, including the duration and the start and end dates. Also, discuss any options such as flexible working hours, working from home, time off in lieu, or unpaid leave, if applicable.
  • 4. Provide documentation: If possible, provide documentation from a healthcare professional about the person you are caring for and the care they require.
  • 5. Know your rights: Familiarise yourself with your rights as an unpaid carer under the law, and any company policies, such as the Family and Medical Leave Act, Carer's leave and flexible working hours.
  • 6. Be open to compromise: Be willing to work with your employer to find a solution that meets the needs of both you and the person you are caring for.
  • 7. Seek support: Speak to your human resource department or trade union representative if you have one, for advice and support.
Remember that your employer is legally obliged to make reasonable adjustments to support you as an unpaid carer. And, it's important to have a plan in place to manage the person you care for while you are away from them, and to keep your employer informed of any changes or developments.
