Protection against discrimination

As an unpaid carer in the UK, you are protected from discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. This act makes it illegal to discriminate against individuals based on certain protected characteristics, including:
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

If you are discriminated against because of your caring responsibilities, you may be able to take legal action. Examples of discrimination in the workplace could include being unfairly treated in the recruitment process, not being offered flexible working arrangements, or being unfairly dismissed.

It's also important to note that if you are caring for someone with a disability, they are also protected from discrimination under the Equality Act.

If you believe you have been the victim of discrimination, it's recommended that you seek advice from a solicitor or a legal advice organisation.
