Carers credit

Carers Credit is a National Insurance credit in the United Kingdom that is designed to help people who are caring for someone with a long-term illness or disability. The credit is intended to help carers maintain their National Insurance record, which is necessary for claiming certain benefits, including the State Pension.

To be eligible for Carers Credit, you must meet certain criteria, including:
  • You must be aged 16 or over
  • You must spend at least 20 hours a week caring for someone who receives certain benefits because of a long-term illness or disability
  • You must not be in full-time education
If you are eligible for Carers Credit, you will receive National Insurance credits which will be added to your National Insurance record. These credits will help you to maintain your National Insurance record and ensure that you have enough National Insurance contributions to qualify for the State Pension.

It's worth noting that Carers Credit does not provide any financial support like Carers Allowance, but it is important for those who are caring for someone as it ensures that their National Insurance record is maintained, and they will qualify for State Pension when they reach the retirement age.

You can apply for Carers Credit through the Gov.uk website or by calling the Carer's Allowance Unit on 0800 731 0297.
