36% of carers don't know what a carers assessment is

A survey carried out by Carers Card UK has found that a staggering 71% of carers that applied for a carers ID card had not previously carried out a carers assessment. Furthermore, 36% of those that had not applied for an assessment didn't even know what one was. The team at Carers Card UK are now working on ways to educate all carers that land on the platform or register for an ID card. The key message will be to educate carers as to what a carers assessment is and how it can assist them in their role as a carer.

What’s a carers assessment?

A carer's assessment is an assessment of the needs of a person who cares for someone else. It is typically conducted by a local authority or healthcare provider and is used to determine the level of support that the carer may require in order to continue providing care. The assessment may consider factors such as the carer's physical and emotional health, their financial situation, and the impact of caring on their daily life. The assessment is used to develop a support plan that addresses the carer's needs and helps them to continue providing care in a sustainable way.

Why is it important?

A carer's assessment is important because it helps to identify the needs and support that a carer may require in order to continue providing care. Without an assessment, the carer may struggle to manage the demands of caring, which can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, financial difficulties, and other problems. By identifying the carer's needs, a carer's assessment can help to ensure that the carer is able to provide care in a sustainable way. This can include providing respite care, financial assistance, and other forms of support to help the carer manage the demands of caring. Additionally, it can also help the person being cared for, as it can identify any support they may need and ensure that they receive the appropriate care.

Overall, a carer's assessment is important because it helps to ensure that both the carer and the person being cared for are able to receive the support they need to maintain their health and well-being. Therefore, the team at Carers card UK will be recommending that all of our carers carry out an assessment.

Are local authorities doing enough?

Well, it’s a matter of debate whether local authorities are doing enough for unpaid carers in general. Some people argue that local authorities are not providing enough support for unpaid carers and that more needs to be done to help them. However, we understand and appreciated that there are several reasons why local authorities struggle to reach unpaid carers, some of which include:

  • Limited funding: Local authorities may not have sufficient funding to provide adequate support for unpaid carers.
  • Limited resources: Local authorities may not have the resources (such as staff) to provide the level of support that unpaid carers need.
  • Lack of awareness: Some local authorities may not be aware of the extent of the support that unpaid carers need.

  • On the other hand, some local authorities have implemented programs and services to support unpaid carers, such as providing financial assistance, respite care, and access to counselling and other forms of support. Our card holders can access this support through the Carers card UK app. It is important to note that the support and services for unpaid carers can vary greatly depending on the location, and it can also depend on the specific needs and circumstances of the unpaid carer. Overall, it can be said that there are some local authorities who are providing good support for unpaid carers, while others may need to improve their support. However, it's a general consensus that more needs to be done in terms of providing support for unpaid carers on a national level.
